Dilantin and Gingival Hyperplasia

I saw a patient recently with gingival hyperplasia as a result of Dilantin.
Dilantin(Phenytoin) is a medication commonly used to treat seizures. However, long-term use of this medication can have a negative impact on gum health.
One of the most common side effects of Dilantin is gingival hyperplasia, which is an abnormal growth of the gums. This can cause the gums to become swollen, red, and bleed easily. This condition is more likely to occur in patients who have poor oral hygiene, and those who take a higher dose of Dilantin.
Dilantin can also lead to xerostomia (dry mouth), which can increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Saliva plays an important role in neutralizing acids produced by bacteria in the mouth and washing away food particles, so a dry mouth can lead to an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
Additionally, Dilantin can also cause changes in the structure of the tooth enamel, leading to discoloration and mottling of the teeth.
It's important for patients who are taking Dilantin to maintain good oral hygiene, including regular dental check-ups and cleanings. A good oral hygiene routine includes carefully brushing teeth twice a day with a Bamboo Toothtapping toothbrush and using a probiotic remineralizing oral gel like Breathealer. Patients should also avoid sugary foods and drinks, and tobacco products as they can cause further damage to the teeth and gums. Patients taking Dilantin should also inform their dentist and dental hygienist of their medication and any changes in their medical history as they may need a different approach to their dental care.
In conclusion, Dilantin can have negative effects on gum health, but by maintaining good oral hygiene, regular dental check-ups, and discussing with their dentist and dental hygienist, patients can minimize the risk of any dental complications. #gumhealth #dilantin #seizures #oralhealth #dentalcare
